Policy 226: Search revised during routine policy updates
As a part of its routine policy revision process, the York Suburban School Board approved an expanded policy on searches. While the policy revision did receive considerable attention, the revision will in no way change the practices of school officials.
Developing and maintaining policy is a mandated responsibility of a school board. Effective policies comprise both local specifications as well as state and federal laws and regulations. State and federal laws have long provided schools with strict guidelines for the cause and scope of any search of a locker, backpack, car or student. The recently adopted policy revision is simply a reiteration of the legal parameters that have been in place for many years. In no way will this revision result in a change in practice. School officials are well trained to always be mindful and respectful of student rights.
