The York Suburban School District is implementing a parent notification and lunch service process starting October 1, 2012.

Parents of elementary students will be notified through their take home folder when their student balances reach the positive $5.00 level to replenish the accounts.  Should a student's account reach a negative balance an Alert Now phone message will be generated by the District to the parent and a cheese sandwich meal will be served to the student until the balance is restored to a positive balance.  If the account balance reaches a negative $10.00, the parent will be notified by the Director of Finance.

Parents of secondary students will also be notified through an envelope provided to the student at a positive $5.00 balance.  If the balance of the student account would reach a negative, the parent will receive an Alert Now  phone message but the student will not receive a meal.  If the account balance reaches negative balance of $10.00, the parent will be notified by the Director of Finance.

Healthy Changes in Our School Cafeterias!

This fall, the York Suburban school food nutrition programs will be meeting tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. As you are aware, when operating under the National School Lunch Program as we do at our schools, the USDA mandates the nutritional guidelines.

As in the past, school meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. However, starting in School Year 2012-2013, there are additional standards that need to be met:

·         Age-appropriate calorie & sodium limits
·         Larger servings of vegetables and fruits
·         Smaller portions of protein/meat alternatives
·         Mandates on vegetable & fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce)
·         Mandates on the types of vegetables offered weekly (requiring more dark green and red/orange vegetables as well as legumes)
·         Fat-free or 1% milk  ONLY (flavored milk must be fat-free)
·         More whole grains  (half of all grains offered must be whole grain)

The district’s new food service management company, Whitsons Culinary Group, is a professional nutrition provider that will help introduce the new changes and create positive experiences in our cafeterias.  School meals remain a great value and are a convenience for busy families too!  Together with Whitsons we look forward to welcoming your children to the cafeteria this fall. To learn more about the new USDA school meal initiatives, you can also visit www.traytalk.org.
